Are You Crazy? Running Hurts!, Yoga

From the desk of Brian Friedman/Owner of Winter Garden Yoga

Each month Winter Garden Yoga features an amazing VIP who has achieved incredible results with our guaranteed methods. We call this feature: Winter Garden Yoga's Client of the Month.

Nominees share their inspirational stories (in their own words) and their photographs to motivate others to break old, destructive habits and to rise higher than they ever thought before.

This month we are proud to share Janie's marvelous story. What did Janie do to get rid of her achy joints? What did Janie do to dump her muffin top? What was Janie's best decision of 2014?

These answers and much, much more will be revealed in Janie's amazing and inspirational story.

Read on...

"As I get ready to run my first 5K in 30 years, I think back on how I got to this point of even considering it. If you had asked me 10 months ago if I would ever run again, my response would have been- 'Are you crazy? Running hurts! ... and so my story begins.

"I had been active all my life and especially enjoyed running until the responsibilities of raising a family and eventually being a single working mom put my needs at the bottom of my priority list. I did a great job of remaining sedentary for years. I kept telling myself I would exercise again and that I'll start tomorrow.

"Tomorrow... tomorrow... tomorrow...

"I was even sick of listening to myself saying that same word over and over in my head. Simply put, I wasn't getting any younger. Every morning my painful joints, my extra weight, and my muffin top reminded me of the effects of menopause. I knew I had to take action.

Winter Garden Yoga helped Janie change her lifestyle. She just completed her first 5K in 30 years!

"I decided to join Winter Garden Yoga initially not knowing a thing about yoga but the schedule was convenient for me and I liked the variety of classes offered. After the first consultation, I thought, 'ok... it's now or never!'

"It was the best decision of 2014!

"What I probably found the most helpful was the personal goal setting. Honestly I was a little overwhelmed at first thinking I can't exercise 3-4 times a week and do 2 classes of yoga and so I tweaked my goals to not weekly but daily. Baby steps I called it. I remember Brian saying, 'JUST MOVE' and so that stuck in my head. It became a mantra.

"As soon as I got home from work I changed into my running shoes, knowing that if I didn't then tomorrow would win. I first started running around my kitchen/dining room while my daughter timed me for 20 second intervals. I eventually moved it to running down the street and back, then half way around the block, then the entire block and as of today I'm going twice around the block...just about 5K.

"My daughter asked me to join her to run in a 5K event and I said, 'Yes, why not? I'm confident that it is something I can do.' Wow! Who would ever thought I'd be saying that at the age of 56 after not running for almost 30 years?

"I met my initial goal of losing 5 pounds but that isn't even important anymore. I stopped worrying about numbers. It's how I feel. Yes my clothes feel better now but more importantly I feel strong. Perhaps it's because I'm moving better thanks to the yoga classes.

"Being a pediatric speech pathologist, I sit most of my day on the floor to play. I can now get up and down faster than the kids and the pain is gone in my knees and back. Thanks, WGY for helping me to change my lifestyle but also for encouraging me during each class to maintain a healthier life

"The fact that I never felt intimidated by the instructors or clients and especially the attitude of truly caring and accepting where you are in this journey to get healthy, is what keeps me coming back."

Have You Seen This Yoga Person Lately?, Transformation

About a year ago, we came up with a great idea: Winter Garden Yoga's Client of the Month. We agreed that this would be a fantastic way to share the amazing success stories of our highly regarded clients.

That was the easy part.

The tough part was trying to decide who would be our first remarkable story. Which one of the many success stories should we highlight? It didn't take long before we decided on Bridget's unbelievable transformation. You can read her full story here.

Right now, we'd like to share Bridget's follow up story in her own words. Did she gain her weight back? Did she stick to the plan? Is Winter Garden Yoga still a part of her life?

All of these questions and more will be answered...

"I was so honored to be chosen as the first Winter Garden Client of the Month last July!

"When I started my yoga classes with WGY in April of 2011, I had no idea how much of a difference it would make in my life. To recap my story, I came to Winter Garden Yoga as a sort of last resort - I was both physically and mentally wiped out! After a series of upheavals in my life - the death of close family members, my marriage breaking up, and quitting smoking - I was in need of some help. And WGY was the kick in the butt I needed!

"Just six months after starting, I had lost 25 pounds. But more than just the weight loss, I FELT amazing! I had gained and lost weight many times before but never [had a transformation quite like the one I experienced at Winter Garden Yoga].

Bridget's amazing transformation. She lost 25 pounds!

"My body became leaner and I became stronger.

"Fast forward 3 years later - since becoming Client of the Month, I have still kept all of the weight off that I lost in 2011. After the holidays in 2013, I saw that my weight was creeping back up and I realized that I was still celebrating the holidays in February! In March I ended up in the hospital with some health problems that were probably due to the fact that I was eating poorly. Because I now take care of my 2 year old granddaughter full time, it's not as easy to exercise or eat right all of the time and even though I make it to two yoga classes a week, I realized I needed to do more.

"So now while my granddaughter naps, instead of sitting on the couch, I pop in a DVD of Brian's Yoga class and work out! I have lost the "holiday" weight plus a few pounds more!

Look at that smile! Bridget has kept the weight off for over 3 years
and has enough energy to keep up with her 2 year old grand daughter.

"I cannot say enough about how much WGY has changed my life. At the age of 55, I am so full of energy even after keeping up with an active 2 year old! Besides the physical benefits, the mental part is just as important. I have become addicted to Karen's Yin Yoga class and look forward to every Tuesday where I can de-stress!

"[I am] so thankful that I found WG Yoga!"

How Did She Avoid Painful Foot Surgery?, Winter Garden Yoga

Every once in a while I come across a story that seems to be too good to be true. When that happens, I get that story out as fast as possible because seeing is believing. This is Kathy's amazing story in her own words...

"I have done it all. Jazzercise, step classes, Curves, gyms with private trainers, stationary biking, running and walking.

"I have had lower back problems and was diagnosed with 2 lower bulging discs twenty years ago. Walking seemed to fit me best for the past five years because of my back concerns but then I was diagnosed with plantar fasciitis in March 2013.

"They told me to do calf stretches 10-12 times a day and [wear] a boot at night. I also had two cortisone shots. It did nothing. I was in so much pain in April 2014 after walking most of the day, I was considering surgery and instead I gave up walking.

In just four weeks, Kathy went from a size 12 to a size 10, has more energy, and has a pain free foot!

"My friend Karen [and fellow VIP] took me to Winter Garden Yoga in June and we loved the beginner's class. (How nice is it to enjoy your exercise instead of dreading it). She also recommended I sign up for private sessions with Brian, which I did weekly, to address my foot pain and back concerns.

"A month later, I did the "Busy Professional's Challenge"[… and after four weeks]...

"I feel stronger, lost weight, and [have] zero foot pain. The food plan helped me understand the benefits of more protein, greens, and lots of water!"

"I am looking forward to becoming stronger and more flexible and also enjoy the friendly and positive people at WGY. I can finally touch my toes!"

Why Did She Wait So Long To Lose 20 Pounds?, Weight Loss

Each month Winter Garden Yoga features an amazing client who has achieved incredible results with our guaranteed methods. We call this feature: Winter Garden Yoga's Client of the Month.

Nominees share their inspirational stories (in their own words) and their photographs to motivate others to break old, destructive habits and to rise higher than they ever thought before.

This month we are proud to share Brenda's marvelous story. What did Brenda do to lose 20 pounds? What did Brenda do to lose 4 inches? What did Brenda do to get more energy?

These answers and much, much more will be revealed in Brenda's amazing and inspirational story.

Read on...

I decided to come to Winter Garden Yoga in February of this year because I had been feeling terrible and dealing with many difficult and terrible symptoms that were affecting my quality of life. For 18 months I was dealing with irritable bowel syndrome, mild brain fog, night sweats, fatigue, an auto-immune reaction causing severe hair loss and overall negative health. I had seen every doctor that I thought might help, had many blood tests, even a colonoscopy with no helpful diagnosis. I felt defeated and hopeless and wanted my life and my health back more than anything. I knew the best way was to reduce stress, implement physical exercise and improve my diet. So that is what I did, all at the same time.

Before                       After
Brenda lost 20 pounds, 4 inches, and has more energy!

Since [becoming a Winter Garden Yoga VIP], I have slowly seen improvement starting from the first class. After a few short weeks, my energy increased and I was already getting stronger. I was also walking on off yoga days and doing 3-4 mile walks with Kathy and class mates on Sundays.

At 3 months, I had lost 7 pounds and the hair loss had started to subside. I had pain in my left upper thigh when sitting cross-legged that I noticed was gone during my classes.

I am now six months in and all my symptoms are gone, I have lost 20 pounds and 4 inches, my hair has stopped falling out and is growing back. I have more energy and confidence than I have had in several years and am so looking forward to continuing to get to the best physical and mental shape of my life, with my WGY family by my side. Being part of this group has been my favorite part of joining WGY. I feel lucky to have access to what I feel is the best studio around. I never felt ashamed, or inadequate even though I had no yoga experience at all.

I waited too long to take my health into my own hands, and what I would say to anyone "on the fence" is "DO IT" ! There is no time like the present to be the best "You", for "you".... :)

Sage Advice from Mr. Las Vegas, Yoga

You can ask my friends, I'm the worst story teller. Here's an example of what I mean...

Believe it or not, I crossed paths with Wayne Newton a few years ago during a visit at Disney's Boardwalk Resort. It took me by surprise because.. honestly, I wasn't expecting to see a living legend right in front of my face. That's pretty much the end of my Wayne Newton story. No autograph. No photograph. Short and sweet.

So what's this got to do with you?

Great question.

You see, Wayne Newton's personal story is a success story. He overcame a lot of obstacles and beat the odds to eventually become known as Mr. Las Vegas and of course to have his hit single featured as Ferris Bueller's theme song. Pretty cool, right?

Yeah, but what's this go to do with you?

Hang in there with me.

When Mr. Newton got news of TV star and child actress, Dana Plato, hitting hard times, he dispensed this valuable advice to her:

“Falling down is not a crime. Not getting up is the crime” ~ Wayne Newton [yes… Wayne Newton]

And now I'd like to dispense this valuable advice to you.

Imagine this common synopsis: it’s a Monday at the end of summer. You've fallen off the wagon. When was the last time you went to yoga? A week? A month? A year?

If you answered honestly and you can relate, your ability to bounce back is essential to your health and wellness success. It is inevitable, you are going to have a bad eating day, week or even a month. Everyone does. Even me.

There’s a 100% chance you’re going to miss yoga and there’s a 100% chance you are going to be surrounded by people who are not supporting your decision to have a healthy lifestyle.

You will fall down.

And just like Wayne says, it’s not okay to stay down.

You've got to practice bouncing back… and the faster the better!

Don’t let a breakfast of donuts throw you off of your entire eating strategy for that day. Get back on track by lunch time, you’re following your plan, you’re hitting your marks.

Don’t let falling off the yoga wagon for a week or two during vacation turn into a month or two and then a year of missed yoga classes.

It’s the classic story of “I missed a week and never went back” and this story will guarantee the exciting, dramatic, sequel… “Then I gained 30 pounds”.

Let today be your day to take on every speed bump, pot hole, detour, and missed exit on your path to wellness. It’s your mind that lets your body down. Not the other way around.

If you’re off track today, start to get back on track RIGHT NOW by:

  • Finding time for some yoga. Fitting in some yoga, even as little as 10 minutes, will help you feel energized, get you motivated, help you get back in the habit.
  • Drink your water. A common recommendation is 1 liter of water a day. Start right now. It will keep you hydrated, energized, and your entire system will feel cleansed.
  • Track your food for the day. It will clue you in to how you've been eating up until now and give you an extra kick in the pants to make healthy decisions the rest of the day… and your life!
  • Go shopping. Go to the store and stock your kitchen with tons of nutrient dense foods. Having healthy foods at your fingertips will increase your likelihood of success exponentially.
  • Throw away the junk food. Get the junk food out of your house. Now. Enough said.

Remember: Resiliency is a habit that can be learned when you practice it over time. Give it time. A quick recovery from the inevitable missteps, setbacks, and outright failures is essential when it comes to achieving your goals.

Get back on track.

Today is your day.

Let nothing stop you.

Make Mr. Las Vegas proud!

How She Turned Her Life Around In 6 Months [And You Can, Too], Weight Loss

Each month Winter Garden Yoga features an amazing client who has achieved incredible results with our guaranteed methods. We call this feature: Winter Garden Yoga's Client of the Month.

Nominees share their inspirational stories (in their own words) and their photographs to motivate others to break old, destructive habits and to rise higher than they ever thought before.

This month we are proud to share Roxanna's marvelous story. What did Roxanna do to wear smaller sized clothes? What did Roxanna do to get better posture? What did Roxaana do to get rid of head trash that was holding her back?

These answers and much, much more will be revealed in Roxannas' amazing and inspirational story.

Read on...

What made you decide to join our studio?

In the past 5 years I have had some health issues and have gone through some very difficult/challenging and life changing events in, my personal and professional life. I was feeling tired, depressed, lost, and [lacked confidence], in summary, I was totally out of balance. I knew I needed to do something, but nothing I tried seemed to help. I kept searching for that one thing that would help me get my life back on track. One day in January 2013, I saw an online offer for 10 YOGA classes. It was an offer I could not refuse, affordable, and an opportunity to try something new. I thought to myself, it can’t hurt, it’s only 10 classes. That is how I discovered Winter Garden Yoga. I loved [functional yoga instruction (tm)] from the first class. I started with Power Yoga, and I felt energized from the first class. I continued to go a couple of times a week and soon realized that my 10 class pack was almost all used and I was not ready to walk away. I signed up for one of the VIP packages and before I knew it, a year had gone by. I just signed up for my second year as a VIP and for small group Kettlebell training.

Before                                    After
Roxanna is feeling more confident, is wearing smaller clothes, and looking better than ever!

What results have you received since joining our studio?

As I learned more about how to better take care of myself, from the inside out, I also learned that this is a journey. At one point I got a bit frustrated by what I perceived to be little or no progress, even though there was progress. I was acting on an old mental model of quick results. I was used to the quick results that at the end never lasted. I used to binge diet or even binge exercise to get quick results. At WGY I was learning that the results may not appear as obvious at first but they were certainly there and they would become lasting results if I decided to follow “the instructions”. About 6 months into this journey I knew I had made progress, but I was not totally convinced that I was on the right path. I needed to really focus and own my destiny; own my health and happiness. I began to be more intentional about it and began to notice more positive changes. The changes I was making resulted in me being able to eliminate two of my medications (working on eliminating others). Now I am wearing a smaller size, all of my clothes fit better, I have better posture, and sleep better.

None of this happened over night, and there certainly was a turning point. I think that sometimes in life you need an event to propel you to that next level. About 1 year into this journey, I was finally on the right track but there was something that was not totally clicking and I could not figure it out. I decided to be more intentional and pay lot more attention to the cues. Apparently I needed more time for “me” and making that time for me has always been a challenge. I needed time to reflect on my life, my future, the changes I was making and the ones I still needed to make in order to live my best life. I decided to be very intentional about exploring my feelings, and evaluating my progress. It was obvious I needed to make a plan. In May I planned a wonderful long vacation. This is the vacation I've been dreaming of for a very long time. I took a three week European cruise vacation. This vacation while packed with a lot of tours, allowed me the time I needed to recharge my batteries. I took this time to focus on “me”, reflecting on my life while planning for the future. I acknowledge my opportunities and celebrated my successes. I let go of negativity and reminded myself how beautiful life is. I decided that I would use the tools, resources and learnings from my time at Winter Garden Yoga to finally turn things around. It was intentional and I needed that. Upon my return, people began to notice a change. I began to hear comments like: you look healthier, your body is changing, you look different, something has changed, you seem happier and more at ease. The changes were now obvious, they are physical and emotional. There is no turning back now…. The journey continues.

How do you feel now compared to how you felt before joining our studio?

I feel confident and at ease. I am physically and emotionally strong. Today, I have more energy, my eating habits are healthier. I feel healthier and balanced! Thank you Brian, for your guidance and support with my diet choices. Keeping a food journal really works and following the instructions really works!

What do you like best about our studio?

I like the support I get from all of my Winter Garden Yoga family. I learn from all of the instructors and my fellow students. Thank you, Brian, Kathy, Janis and Karen; you are the best support team anyone could ever ask for. To my fellow yoga students, you inspire me every day and fill me with joy and energy.

What would you say to someone on the fence about joining our studio?

Don’t wait; start now to change your life for the better. You will not regret! There is no better time than right now.

What do you do outside of the studio (work, etc)?

I am a mother of 2 amazing young men (25 and 19) and wife to my husband of 30 years. I enjoy vacationing with my family and with my husband, especially cruising or fishing vacations in Sanibel Island. I run/walk in [5K events] every chance I get. I balance my time so I have time for all of the important people in my life inclusive of family and friends near and far. Every chance I get, I meet a friend in person to catch up. I believe in building and nurturing relationships and have started to build new friendships with some of amazing individuals I met at Winter Garden Yoga. I also take “me” time. I go for walks, spa treatments, read and meditate (still working on the last one). I work in Human Resources as Manager leading projects and organizational initiatives.

The One Single Simple Solution, Fat Loss

It's hard to believe that Winter Garden Yoga will be open four years come October 9, 2014. During that amazing course of time, I've had the honor of working with a very diversified group of people. My long list of clients includes: doctors, business managers, stay at home parents, athletes, non-athletes, you name it.

The incredible thing that all of these folks have in common is a simple question: "What does it take?"

What does it take to make serious, permanent, and positive changes? I addressed this in a previous blog post. But I'd like to share with you another simple and powerful way to make things happen. The good news is... it is easier than you think.

A common conversation I have with folks goes along these lines...

"I'm trying to get out of my 'funk' and get fit again. I’m trying to tone up and prepare for my wedding (or my class reunion or pretty much fill in the blank)."

These are all valid goals. And the good news for goals like these (and pretty much any other goal), there’s a 100% success rate.

You read that correctly, 100%. There's just a tiny little caveat...

You must show up!

Take this familiar scenario for example:

8:30am and Saturday morning's Power Yoga class has come and gone.

This person just couldn't get themselves out of bed and over the hurdle of showing up on a Saturday morning to take the first step to becoming the best version of themselves... it’s interesting, instructive, and we can learn from their failure.

You must show up!

Your power is in showing up.Every decision you make is either moving you in the direction of your goals or away from your goals. There’s no neutral.

By allowing your internal resistance (your reasons, your excuses, your stories) to hold you back, you simply don’t show up. And not only are you farther from you goal, you will actually move away from the very thing you are trying to achieve.

To sum it up, this person is not exactly where they were on Saturday. In fact, they're further behind and it's because they didn't show up. Their rationale to not show up is stronger than ever now. Their goals are much further away than they were previously.

“The failure to act is much more often the product of inner, emotional resistance than external resistance. To move forward you must give up your story, whether it is excuses about your childhood, lack of education, your 'bad luck', your un-supportive family, your low metabolism, where you live, etc". ~Dan Kennedy

Compare that to the successful story of someone who did show up...

She wants to lose 15 pounds, while toning and strengthening her entire body. She wants to be confident, energized, and feel good about herself again.

During our consultation, we discussed where she is now, where she wants to be, came up with an action plan, and got her up and running. Her first yoga class is scheduled for Saturday morning at 8:30am.

She showed up!

Look at the astonishing difference showing up made for her. She’s been eating better for 2 days and she’s been to yoga twice. She's already feeling fantastic and looking forward to next week.. and all of this because she showed up.

There’s power here!

These VIPs showed up! ...and continue to do so...

Marita lost 26 pounds just by showing up!

Bridget lost 25 pounds and has kept it off for 2 years because she shows up!

Lisa is more toned and stronger just by showing up!

I want to encourage you to condition yourself to do what you say you do, to be where you’ll say you’ll be, to think the thoughts that will move you forward and not backward.

Remember:
  • There is no neutral decision
  • Show up
  • Be positive
  • Move forward

Let today be the day you let go of your history, your story, and the negative circumstances that hold you in place.

The magic is in that single powerful action... showing up... and showing up again... and again... and again... and again...

Let this be your day.

My Local Gym Was Cheaper, But The Chronic Injuries Weren't Worth It, Fat Loss

Each month Winter Garden Yoga features a client who has achieved amazing results with our guaranteed methods. We call this feature: Winter Garden Yoga's Client of the Month.

Nominees share their stories (in their own words) and their photographs to inspire others to break old, destructive habits and to rise higher than ever before.

This month we are proud to share Byron's story. How has Byron's work productivity improve? How did he drop 20 pounds? And how did Byron become injury free?

Read on...

What made you decide to join our studio?

"For many years my wife and I belonged to a local gym that was much cheaper. I did weight machines, yoga, Zumba and the treadmill. I injured myself several times. My shoulder injury required a medical MRI. My shoulder remained a problem for more than a year. I also had shin splints and problems with my wrists. Although my strength and flexibility improved, I continued to gain weight. Meanwhile, my daughter, who is the director of the Athletic Training degree program at UCF and my wife started casually at [Winter Garden Yoga]. Both my daughter and wife kept telling me about Brian Friedman being an expert in anatomy. I finally decided to attend WGY and Brian helped me with my wrists and shoulder. Another thing that attracted me to WGY was Yin Yoga. I have a rewarding, but high stress job at Disney. I am the day time supervisor at Reedy Creek Power Plant. Guided meditation changes the way one perceives the world and life in general. My job stress has reduced dramatically."

What results have you received since joining our studio?

"I started to see the value of closely supervised practice. My local gym was cheaper, but the chronic injuries were not worth it. My shoulder and wrist issues are resolved and in spite of my enjoying short runs, the shin splints have not returned. Job stress is WAY down making me even more effective in my job. I enjoy the challenges more. Still, I remained a “casual” or drop-in member for a year, even though my wife left teaching yoga at the local gym to become exclusive to WGY. I just wasn’t sure I could commit and attend two or more classes a week. Sometimes my job schedule interferes. When my weight was still not coming off I decided to take a closer look at the contract plans offered by WGY. On April 9th 2014, after reviewing my goals, my physical and mental benefits and the flexible packages offered at WGY I signed a year-long VIP contract."

Before                                              After

Byron lost 20 pounds, has more energy, and is injury free!

What do you like best about our studio?

"The expertise of all of the instructors. I enjoy the workshops and videos offered. I took Brian Friedman’s kettle bell workshop and bought the videos. Since I stopped lifting weights at the local gym and attended the kettle bell workshop I can practice weights at home without any further injury. It makes a great difference to build a proper anatomical foundation for all movement in weight or yoga and it works “off the mat” in everyday life too. I am injury free. I know that the experts at WGY are going to break down every move and explain the intention of each move. I thought I was doing things correctly at the local gym, but the foundation was missing."

After (from the side)
Notice the clothes pin taking up the slack in Byron's shirt.

What would you say to someone on the fence about joining our studio?

"What surprised me was the element of commitment. I was on the fence for so long. Once I committed to a contract I got serious. I changed how I ate. I was able to make 2 or 3 classes a week, in spite of my job. I remain injury free and to date I lost 20lbs in 6 weeks! Committing made a difference. Also, I can get advice and personalized attention or instruction. VIP status gives me “head of the line” entrance into workshops at a discounted rate. Having a contract reduced my class fee. I got a “bigger bang for my buck” than I got at the cheaper local gym. The studio, expertise of the instructors, physical and mental benefits, nutrition e-book, commitment and the positive attitude of students is worth the money!"

Cardio: The Weakest Link [Contentious Content], Cardio

As Winter Garden's most recognized health and nutrition expert, I have the honor and the pleasure of interacting with and helping a wide array of people achieve their health and wellness goals. And one of the most common questions I get is: "What about cardio?" I'll do my best to address this question, but first...

...I want to be clear...

Cardio is fine if you enjoy cardio; there is nothing wrong with cardio. In fact, I believe that cardio is an important piece to an intelligent and balanced approach to physical fitness and overall wellness. Just ask our VIPs about their personalized action plans.

...Here's the rub...

Cardio is the weakest link in the health and wellness chain. In other words, you get the least bang for your buck. Allow me to explain...

Here's what a balanced approach to wellness and general physical fitness looks like [in this order]

Number one: Strength
Number two: Mobility
Number three: Cardio

Let's run through a few hypothetical questions.

Can preparing for a 5K help you with your upper body strength? No.
Can strength training help you with your upper body strength? Yes... and mobility, too.
Which of these two training methods will help you push yourself off the floor if you happen to fall down?

Can preparing for a 5K help you with your mobility and injury prevention? No.
Can yoga help you with your mobility and injury prevention? Yes... and strength, too.
Which of these two training methods will help you pick up your groceries or grand children?

Let's take another perspective...

Strength burns more calories [for up to 36 hours after training], tones the muscles, and taxes the heart and lungs [in a good way... aka cardio]

Mobility [yoga] burns more calories [because of the muscle contractions... aka, static and isotonic strength], tones the muscles, increases body awareness, increases mobility, and can tax the heart and lungs [in a good way... aka cardio]

Cardio burns fewer calories [and the calorie burn stops when you stop], taxes the heart and lungs [in a good way]

The take away...

Instead of doubling up on your cardio because you missed a yoga class, grab a kettlebell, or pop in your favorite yoga DVD and get started.

Yoga is a great way to cover a lot of bases. At Winter Garden Yoga, we emphasize strength over flexibility, and alignment over depth. This way, you get toned muscles, and a mobile body that is resistant to injury.

Kettlebell training is an awesome way to develop strength, mobility, and cardio in an all-in-one method.

And once you've gotten your yoga and kettlebells done, take the next day to go for a nice walk, get some fresh air, and enjoy the cardio.

Winter Garden Yoga is a world renowned yoga studio recognized for providing a unique form of “functional yoga instruction” that gives you a toned, pain-free body that leaves you feeling great whether you’re currently flexible or not.

Unlike ordinary yoga studios with crowded classes that over stretch and leave you feeling lost in the crowd, our services focus on strength, mobility, and nutrition all wrapped up into a caring, supportive, family-like environment you’ll call home.

Why Is She On Her Fourth Set of Yoga Clothes?, Weight Loss

Each month Winter Garden Yoga features a client who has achieved amazing results with our guaranteed methods. We call this feature: Winter Garden Yoga's Client of the Month.

Nominees share their stories (in their own words) and their photographs to inspire others to break old, destructive habits and to rise higher than ever before.

This month we are proud to share Kim's story. Why is she purchasing her fourth set of yoga clothes? How did she drop 30 pounds? And where did she get her guns?

Read on...

What made you decide to join our studio?

I was looking for an alternative way to get in shape and lose weight. I had quit smoking the year before and had packed on quite a few pounds, had a very high stress job where our company had been bought out and our roles were changing. I didn't even know if I would have a job. I had no energy, was "looking my age" (Yuck), my zest for life was just not there anymore, and I couldn't breathe, literally (allergies and asthma). My family doctor said, "No high impact" workouts. He advised yoga was the approved method of exercise for me. I searched for a month or so and saw the WGY Facebook page. I checked out the website, and was immediately drawn to the philosophy of the studio of not being required to be flexible, and focusing on how well you pose (quality) vs. how deep you go into a pose. And the fact that two of the instructors were Reiki Masters at this studio told me this was a "real" yoga studio that had not only cared about your physical health, but your overall health as well.

What results have you received since joining our studio?

Wow! Where do I start? So far, I've lost 4 inches around my bust line, 4 inches off of my waist, 6 inches off of my hips and 2 inches off of my thighs. My legs actually have definition/muscle again. My cholesterol dropped 20 points (now a total of 145) since I started yoga. My doctor is thrilled ! My breathing tests before yoga were anywhere from 69% to 87% oxygen level. When I visited the doctor a year later (April 2014), my breathing improved to a 98% oxygen level. I'm on my FOURTH set of yoga clothes and yes they are already becoming loose! I'm down two jean sizes and two blouse sizes. I actually have biceps again or as Brian calls them - "Guns !" I am down 30 lbs thanks to a great nutrition plan suggested to me by Brian Friedman that works beautifully for my lifestyle. I've had a few WTH [What The H*ll] moments when I discovered I am able to sit comfortably in fire log pose. When I first started I was unable to lie in supine twist pose without a bolster under my legs. This is now a comfortable pose and one of my favorites. My posture is significantly improved!

Before

After

Kim on her fourth set of yoga clothes, down 2 sizes, lost 30 pounds, and feeling years younger!

How do you feel now compared to how you felt before joining our studio?

After the first week, my hips stopped hurting. Within about 3 months my knees and feet stopped hurting. After a few months, my back stopped hurting and I noticed increased energy. My core is stronger, my poses are becoming deeper. I can touch my toes now with ease!! I have not felt this good since I was in my 20's and I'm happier than I've ever been.

What do you like best about our studio?

First and foremost is the owner and instructors. Brian, Karen, Janis and Kathy are people who genuinely care about your health and well being and ensure that you receive what you need. They are just excited as you are when you improve your health and well-being. There are no cookie cutter approaches and no gimmicks. This behavior carries over to the students and I've been fortunate enough to make several new friends who are amazing people. This is why we all say, Welcome to the WGY Family! I know it sounds quirky, but it's 100% true. I've never met a better group of people than at WGY.

What would you say to someone on the fence about joining our studio?

What are you waiting for ?! You deserve this ! WGY has changed my life !! This is the most amazing studio with the most amazing instructors and students. I "hate" exercising, but if someone told me I could get in shape and feel this great with NO PAIN, I would have done this years ago. Imagine that this is your loved one. Wouldn't you want them to be as healthy and as happy as they could possibly be? Now picture yourself in that place of your loved one. Just do it! It's not selfish to take care of you and your health and well being. As a matter of fact, it's the best thing you can do for yourself and your loved ones. Oh my gosh! I almost forgot to mention. In October 2013, I suffered a stress fracture in my right foot and had to wear a "boot" for 8 weeks. My podiatrist advised I could wear no more high heels, supportive shoes only and no bare feet at home. Even during this time, WGY was able to modify the yoga poses so that I could continue to practice safely and still receive the benefits. How many other studios would do that? I'd say 0 !

What do you do outside of the studio (work, etc)?

I work for a telecommunications provider as a project coordinator. It's a very busy and demanding job. I spend as much time as possible when I'm not working, with my wonderful family, friends and my three beautiful exotic birds (macaws) Newton, Elliot and Hyah. And of course, I'm at WGY 3 to 4 days a week for yoga and kettle bell practice; my second family.

Isn't it time to do something just for you? Are you ready to be just like Kim? Are you ready for your own life changing transformation?

What Type of Person Are You? [Warning: May Be Offensive], Fat Loss

As Winter Garden's most sought after fitness expert, I've had the privilege of helping 100s, maybe 1,000s of people transform their lives. Everything from weight loss, strength gains, increased energy, more flexibility, pretty much anything you can name.

It Takes Two

What has struck me recently, is that out of all these different folks, there are essentially two types of people.

Now... before I go on... please understand that I am not passing judgement on anyone.

I'm not saying someone is bad or good, or better than or less than. What I am saying is that there are people who get results and people who don't. It's just that simple and I've seen it time and time again.

Does the Shoe Fit?

The first type of person is the blamer. These are the folks who blame everything... EVERYTHING... for the inability to get results or meet their goals. The blamer sounds like this:

"Work is so crazy... I can't come to yoga tonight."

"My husband/wife doesn't eat the way I do, so I just eat what he/she eats."

"I have to pick someone up at the airport... there's no way I have time to go for a walk."

"They were serving cake at work so I just had to have a piece."

I'm sure you get the idea and I'm sure you can imagine that these folks don't get very far when it comes to transforming their lives... whether it's weight loss, increased energy, or whatever they are trying to achieve.

And notice that these may strike you as perfectly acceptable, valid reasons. When we use perfectly valid reasons they let us 'off the hook' so to speak... that's their function. But remember: everyone has a stressful life, a crazy work schedule. The difference is overcoming the obstacle.

The next group of people know how to overcome obstacles.

The second person is the doer. These are the folks who do everything... EVERYTHING... to achieve their goals. The doer sounds like this:

"Work is so crazy... I need yoga more than ever, so I'm going to talk to my boss and see if I can come in early tomorrow to make up for what I may miss tonight."

"My husband/wife doesn't eat the way I do, so I make two meals when needed so that I can stay on track."

"I have to pick someone up at the airport... they can wait an extra 30 minutes so that I can get my walk in." [This one is based on a true story... now that's a doer!]

"They were serving cake at work, so I respectfully declined because I don't want to sabotage my results."

The following Winter Garden Yoga VIPs are Doers...

Gloria is a 'doer'. She Dropped from a size 8 to a size 2 while transitioning into a stressful new job.

Jessica is a 'doer'. She's a busy school teacher and in the midst of preparing her upcoming wedding, yet she managed to lose 10 pounds, her muffin ring, and a pants size.

Margaret is a 'doer'. She's an involved at home school mom and very active in the community. She stopped the blame game and now she's more mobile, pain free, and feeling better than ever!
You Can Do It!

One of the many benefits of Winter Garden Yoga's VIP packages is the accountability. Our VIPs are literally surrounded by people who want to succeed. And they want you to succeed too.

One of our VIP Success Principles is to surround yourself with like minded people. You want to be around folks who will lift you up and inspire you... not hold you down.

If you're ready to put an end to the blame game, if you're ready to make amazing things happen for your life, then I want you to contact us for a free, no obligation consultation. You've got nothing to lose because your results are guaranteed. Get started now!

It's Not Just a Story, It's Epic, Nutrition

It's one of the most talked about and controversial subjects in all of Winter Garden Yoga. The Epic Smoothie. The VIPs of Winter Garden Yoga are among the chosen few who have experienced the Epic Smoothie... or at least... have heard about it. Now it's time to get the record straight about the origins of this WGY original.

Let's go back to Central Florida right around the turn of the 21st century. I was looking for a way to acquire a balanced, nutrition-rich, meal that was easy to make. Back then, it was called a smoothie. At the time (and even now) smoothies got a bad rap... and who can place blame? After all, most smoothies are made with junk and filled with sugar. But I was searching for something different... or so I thought.

The Early Days

You see, the first few versions of my healthy smoothie were made from dairy (because I needed calcium, protein, and vitamin D and thought it was only available via dairy), fruit (for the fiber, potassium, and vitamins), whey protein powder (because everyone was telling me that I HAD to use whey), and the list goes on.

Although the earlier versions were miles ahead of the powdered mixes being used among my peers, I knew there was plenty of room for improvement.

Enter Doug Swenson and Veganism

I know... I can hear the groans from here... veganism! Hang in there, it's worth the read.

I attended a yoga teacher training course in Lake Tahoe California under the tutelage of my friend and yoga teacher, Doug Swenson. As part of the experience, I made a vow that I would eat as closely as possible to the way Doug ate. At the time I was definitely a vegetarian and Doug was (and still is) a very strict vegan. So... Doug taught me how to substitute healthier foods for less healthy options. For example: almond milk instead of dairy milk, soy crumbles instead of burger crumbles, and so on. He also shared a few of his 'go to' recipes which included... you guessed it... smoothies.

We learned how to make 'meal replacement' smoothies and 'dessert' smoothies. All of which contained the most fundamental, healthy, and plant based ingredients. Needless to say, this changed everything and got the Epic Smoothie heading in an entirely new direction.

Back to the Drawing Board

When I came back from California, I used the basic recipe of my previous smoothies, except this time I substituted the fundamental ingredients with their vegan equivalents. Oddly enough, it tasted great and packed a powerful punch. Everybody loves the Epic Smoothie... and I mean everybody. It makes sense because it's full of nutrient dense, plant based foods with the correct balance of proteins to (favorable) carbohydrates.

What's in it, Already?

The ingredients may vary from time to time depending on availability, taste preferences, etc. Feel free to experiment. Always check with your doctor or health care provider before undertaking any new exercise or health program.

8 ounces Almond Milk
1 Banana
1 Handful almonds (or 2 TBSP almond butter, no sugar added)
1 TBSP cinnamon
1 TBSP raw, organic, cacao
1 tsp     raw, organic, macca
1 serving vegan protein powder (use the manufacturer's guidelines)
1 serving powdered greens (use he manufacturer's guidelines)
1 TBSP pure maple syrup (use the real stuff made from real trees)
1 handful spinach
1 handful ice

Blend well. Enjoy!

Battle Tested

The Epic Smoothie has been approved by chefs, omnivores, vegans, vegetarians, children, adults, you name it. You get 39 grams of protein, 77 grams of carbs, iron, potassium, calcium, magnesium, vitamin A, vitamin C, Vitamin D, and more. Give it a try and let me know what you think.

Winter Garden Yoga's VIP packages are personalized just for you. They include nutrition, yoga, community, and most importantly... accountability. If you're ready to put an end to the frustration of feeling stuck, contact us to set up a free, no obligation consultation.

PS: our friends at The Juice Bar of Winter Garden have the Epic Smoothie on their menu!

This is Nuts!... Literally, Healthy Eating

We have five core values at Winter Garden Yoga: Value, Integrity, Consistency, Compassion, and Expertise. Each and every one of our instructors (including me) hold ourselves accountable with this powerful checklist. Recently, Janis, shared a great story with me and I asked her to share with the rest of the world. I think it is important because it shows that Janis lives up to our Core Values... Integrity and Consistency really shine through in this story.

"...week 4 without Coke or fries! You have no idea how BIG this is for me! I've been very focused on Brian Friedman's [VIP exclusive ebook] "How to Get the Best Results." I'm a high energy person who tends to become hypoglycemic. I tend to pack 2 days of errands into a 3/4 of a day, run out of energy, get the "shakes" and next thing I know, I'm consuming Coke and fries. Not any more!

Winter Garden Yoga Instructor, Janis Dey, packs her own healthy snacks when she's 'on the go'...
and she's 'always on the go.'

"By reading, Brian's ebook, I realized I was lacking sufficient food and especially protein. Now I eat better before I leave the house and I bring 'Brian approved snacks' and water with me--AT ALL TIMES! Pictured is my container of organic pumpkin seeds, almonds, and cashews. I selected larger seeds and nuts because they travel well, can be eaten while[on the go] and because they shut off my "shakes." Yes, I need more protein and good carbs. The water really quenches my thirst & seems to give me a fuller feeling in my stomach. It works for me!

"Not only has this stopped my "drive-thru habit" and saved me money, I have lost the 5lbs of my Holiday weight gain! (Yes, my family was here from South Africa for the holidays and we had the time of our lives, so don't judge, LOL!) I am also proud that this new way benefits my body, mind and Spirit! Try it yourself!

"Thank you, Brian Friedman and all my Winter Garden Yoga friends, who reach out and encourage us all to better ourselves through the sharing of our stories!"

Janis walks the walk and talks the talk. That shows integrity.

What are you waiting for?

Isn't it time to do something for you and you alone? Are you ready to be just like Janis? Are you ready for your own life changing transformation? Are you ready to develop life changing habits?

Muffin Top? I had a Muffin Ring! [Amazing Results]

Every once in a while I come across a story that seems to be too good to be true. When that happens, I get that story out as fast as possible because seeing is believing. This is Jessica's amazing story in her own words...

"My name is Jessica. I am an elementary school teacher. When I began [one of Winter Garden Yoga's programs, "The Skinny Jeans Challenge"], I had no idea how one step in the right direction could change me and how I feel about myself.

"I met with Brian to get started and that night I changed my diet. I began following the [VIP exclusive ebook] “How to Get the Best Results”. As the first week passed by and I completed a couple of yoga classes and walking on my elliptical, I noticed a difference in how I felt. I was sleeping better and I could make it an entire school day without feeling like I needed a nap.

"As the weeks passed and I stayed on track by eating right, doing yoga, and walking. In those 4 weeks I lost a total of 10 pounds and my “muffin top” began shrinking.

Before                                        After

Jessica lost 10 pounds and her 'muffin ring' in about four weeks!

"My legs no longer get cramps, I sleep like a baby, I stay full all say without munching on junk food, and best of all, I fit back into my pants the right way.

"I went from a 5/6 back down to a 3/4 and I couldn't be happier.

"All my clothes fit right again. I am amazed by the results I've gotten from Winter Garden Yoga. I can’t thank Brian and the rest of the Winter Garden Yoga team enough for how they have changed my life.

"I am happier, healthier, and I’m in much better shape! I love the results I got from the [first four weeks] so much that I signed up to be a VIP to continue my yoga practice and journey."

Let's see...

  • Down a size
  • Sleeping better
  • Feeling great
  • Looking great
  • Fitting into skinny jeans

Imagine Fat Loss, Muscle Gain, and Loving Every Minute of It, Fat Loss

Each month Winter Garden Yoga features a client who has achieved amazing results with our guaranteed methods. We call this feature: Winter Garden Yoga's Client of the Month.

Nominees share their stories (in their own words) and their photographs to inspire others to break old, destructive habits and to rise higher than ever before.

This month we are proud to share Teresa's story. How did she lose fat, gain, muscle, and become pain free for the first time in years?

Read on...

What made you decide to join our studio?

I had just returned from my hometown in Hawaii where I visited my “fitness focused” family for the holidays. For the 3 weeks I was there, I went to the gym, paddle boarded, hiked, swam, surfed etc. For over a year, I suffered with constant shoulder and clavicle pain and by the end of my visit, the pain was unbearable, even after several massage, chiropractic and acupuncture treatments. I wanted to keep fit, so I thought yoga might be something I could handle. I practiced yoga off and on since I was a preteen because my mother was a yogi. As an adult, I occasionally did yoga videos at home, but this didn’t have enough impact for results. I wanted to try a real class with live instructors and a friend told me that Winter Garden Yoga had just opened a big studio [at 12 West Plant Street, Winter Garden, Florida] and she heard it was good. I signed up for a 2 week introductory offer and I was hooked!

What results have you received since joining our studio?

I have lost fat and gained muscle. Ive dropped 8 -10 lbs, but have gone down at least 2 sizes in clothing. Even the new yoga pants I bought 6 months ago are baggy on me now. I am stronger, have better mobility and more energy.

How do you feel now compared to how you felt before joining our studio?

The results listed above are great and I have been in good shape before, but the best part is this:

#1. I now have good posture! This is something I have battled with my entire life without success. I slouch less than ever before and anyone that hasn’t seen me in awhile notices the big change.
#2. I am living without constant pain! Brian taught me techniques that enable me to do my job without injuring myself. The FYI and Kettelbell training created new habits I use at work and in everything I do. I now move with proper alignment, which builds strength and keeps me safe and injury free.
#3. I am a much calmer person. The WGY classes and breathing techniques have given me an inner calm that helps me cope with everything life deals me. My stress level has dropped several notches. Yin Yoga has really helped with this! WGY truly benefits Mind, Body and Spirit.

  Before                                           After

What do you like best about our studio?

The positive energy. All of the instructors at WGY are so helpful, supportive and treat me like family. WGY attracts like-minded people who share this good energy. No matter whatʻs going on in my life, as soon as I walk into WYG, I am calmed and leave there with a renewed energy that gets me through all the rest of the stuff that life deals.

What would you say to someone on the fence about joining our studio?

If you are looking for real change, this is the place for you. If you’ve tried unsuccessful fitness programs and diets, live with pain, stress or negativity and want real results, then do not hesitate! You are blessed to have found WGY!

What do you do outside of the studio (work, etc)?

I have worked physically hard as a film and stage technician since 1988. This required lots of heavy lifting, which resulted in shoulder, low back injuries and lumbar compression. My chiropractor told me in 2004 that I needed to find another line of work or I could be in a wheelchair by the time I was 50. For years dabbled in soap making and aromatherapy and by 2006 I made Coconut Clean into a real business. As my business grew, so did the workload and I was back to heavy lifting. Now that I am a WGY VIP, my job is so much easier! For several years I was into rock climbing and hadn’t been in a long time because of pain. I recently visited the rock climbing gym and was able to enjoy it, pain-free! I never dreamed that when I walked into Winter Garden Yoga, that I would receive so many amazing benefits on so many levels… Thanks WGY!
