Algorithm for Happiness

It's Easier Than You Think

An algorithm can be defined as a step-by-step procedure for problem solving. I would like to share a few, simple, procedures that I use to gain perspective on things whenever I need a little "pick me up."

It Could Be Worse

My great grandma Harper used to say, "Things ain't so bad, they cain't be worse." Thought provoking indeed. This one requires little or not explanation. Yes, you may have gotten into a fender bender, but it could have been worse, right? Focus on the fact that you're alive and unharmed and able to tell the story.

Miraculous Things Happen

This will be shared in the form of a story. A true story. Maria was a student of mine when I used to teach in east Orlando. At the time, Maria was 74 years young. She used to ride her bike to and from the studio and she used to practice her handstands -yes, her handstands- after class before she went home.

One day, Maria and I were talking and she shared this with me. She said, "you know, Brian, whenever I feel the blues or start to feel a little down, I stop myself and look at my finger. I say to myself, 'what a miraculous thing my finger nail is. Thank you, God, that I am a part of such a miracle.' Then I look at my cuticles and say, 'what a miraculous thing my cuticle is. Thank you, God, that I am part of such a miracle.'"

Then she said, "you know what? By the time I get to my wrist, I'm feeling much better." Pay attention to this lesson.

It's Easy As 1-2-3

I was visiting friends on their farm in the Midwest. I just loved their laid back attitude toward everything. They just seemed to be at ease with whatever came their way. I spoke with the head of the house and asked her what the secret to her family's happiness was. She said, "It's really very simple. We just ask ourselves three questions: Are we fed? Are we clothed? Do we have a roof over our heads? If the answer is, yes, yes, and yes, then we know everything is going to be all right."

How About You?

I want to encourage you to pick one of these algorithms and use it for 10 days straight. Then choose another and another and repeat. I believe that you will be surprised at how easy it is to put things in perspective and stay in the realm of awesomeness.

All the best,

Brian

The doctors said I couldn't, Winter Garden Yoga said I could

As the owner and director of Winter Garden Yoga, I am truly fortunate and absolutely blessed that I can help a wide variety of people achieve a wide variety of goals. This is Sheree's story in her own words. Her eight week journey began with a painful, immobile shoulder. She was advised to quit coming to her favorite yoga class and her daily chores were a painful experience. After working together, privately, Sheree has recovered 95% and is virtually pain free. Sheree is still working to maintain and possibly improve her results.

Here's Sheree's story...

"Last July I returned home from vacation with a sore shoulder which I blamed on carrying around a heavy day pack loaded with water bottles, camera, etc. I decided to give my shoulder a break and skipped my yoga classes for several weeks.

"I was still feeling a lot of pain and my mobility was limited, but thought I would push through it and start back anyway, but learned very quickly that power yoga was no longer an option for me, and there were some poses I could no longer maintain in the beginner yoga class.

"My day-to-day activities were being affected also – simple chores like hanging up my clothes or drying my hair. Feeling frustrated, I sought medical help and was diagnosed with arthritis in my shoulder.

"The orthopedist explained what he was seeing, said this was common for someone over 50, recommended I quit the power yoga class, and had a physical therapist come up with a course of exercises.

"After completing 8 weeks of the recommended [physical therapy] exercises I did notice improvement. However, my range of motion was still quite limited. That’s when Winter Garden Yoga sent out [a series of special offers] – one being an FMS package.

Sheree and Brian worked together to find a solution for Sheree's chronic shoulder pain.

"Brian and I had had a discussion earlier where I explained why arthritis couldn't be cured and no amount of exercising was going to help, and he explained why the right combination of exercises just might help

"I decided to give it a shot and start the New Year off right. I purchased the FMS package and met with Brian for our first session on Jan. 2. One week after our first session I had not noticed any change so he came up with another plan. Between our second session and last (which was today - Feb. 8) I have gained back 95% of my mobility and am thrilled.

"He worked out the right combination of exercises for me and now a short exercise program each morning is part of my normal routine. During the month of January I was out on travel twice, and these techniques became part of my routine in the hotel room also.

"I am now able to fully participate in power yoga again, and as I was unloading the dishwasher before class this morning I realized that this was another pain-free chore that was a problem for me just one month ago.

"Thanks Brian! You are the best!"

Why I Believe In Winter Garden Yoga (And Maybe You Should Too), Yoga

Each month Winter Garden Yoga features a client who has achieved amazing results with our guaranteed methods. We call this feature: Winter Garden Yoga's Client of the Month.

Nominees share their stories (in their own words) and their photographs to inspire others to break old, destructive habits and to rise higher than ever before.

This month we are proud to share Teresa's story. How did she become pain free for the first time in years after endless session of acupuncture, chiropractors, and other therapies?

Read on...

“You will find your place again,” that’s what I was saying to myself when Winter Garden Yoga found me walking by it’s doors.

"Hi my name is Teresa I’m 47 I am employed as a dental hygienist. I relocated to Winter Garden one year ago last December. When the body is under more stress than it can take on it just stops, even breathing.

Teresa's story is a testament to the internal effects of yoga. After years of chronic pain, Teresa found relief at Winter Garden Yoga.

"WGY taught me how to find my own breath again. With each breath I began healing internally soon after the external pain began to subside by incorporating functional yoga exercises Brian had me do at home along with weekly class work.

"WGY has provided the foundation for me to begin again by allowing me to belong to an amazing teaching yoga studio. One of the first things you would notice about WGY is how all the instructors represent the studio as one not as individuals this is very nurturing.

"The question was asked “ How do I feel now compared to how I felt before I joined the studio?” When I first started coming I would sometimes cry from so much inner and outer pain I was bringing to the mat and now I still cry sometimes when I'm on my mat but they are tears of peaceful release and gratitude no more pain! I Found My Place Thank You, WGY!"
