She's Got One Leg. What's Your Excuse?, Yoga

Each month Winter Garden Yoga features a client who has achieved amazing results with our guaranteed methods. We call this feature: Winter Garden Yoga's Client of the Month.

Nominees share their stories (in their own words) and their photographs to inspire others to break old, destructive habits and to rise higher than ever before.

This month we are proud to share Karen's story. What did Karen do to get rid of her chronic neck and shoulder pain? What made such an impactful impression on Karen's chiropractor?

These answers and much, much more will be revealed in Karen's amazing and inspirational story.

My story~ by Karen Hughes

"I could barely turn my head; the slightest movement resulted in a sharp pain. My shoulders felt like they were pinned to my neck, and slumped forward. My entire body felt stiff and unresponsive. Basically, I felt like I was turning to stone! I was depressed and worried about what my quality of life would be like in the future.

"I have been an amputee since age 13, when I lost my leg above the knee to bone cancer. For years I never skipped a beat; I led a very active life and felt strong and healthy. Even after two c-section pregnancies I felt I was in pretty good physical shape, but after I turned 50 everything started to change. ”Is it all downhill from here?,” I feared. I had never felt disabled before, but was beginning to see myself that way. My sister urged me to try yoga, and suggested that I seek out an experienced instructor who would be willing to help me adapt the poses to my needs. I was apprehensive since I had absolutely no experience with yoga and was far from flexible, but desperate for help, decided to give it a try. A Google search led me to Brian and [Winter Garden Yoga]. On January 11, 2012, I sent an email inquiry and later that day received a response from Brian which began, 'Hi Karen. You came to the right place!' Boy, did I ever!

Karen's commitment to her health and wellness has helped her achieve many personal breakthroughs.

"In the 2+ years since I slowly climbed the stairs to WGY’s original studio wondering, “am I going to be able to do this?,” I have experienced a tremendous growth in my physical and spiritual well-being. Once unable to turn my head or sit up straight on the floor without a wedge under my bottom, my neck and shoulders are now flexible and pain-free! The pain and tightness in my hips has also vanished. My chiropractor recently remarked, “whatever you’re doing at WGY, keep on doing it! You are holding your corrections much longer and your posture is great!” Even my boss, who is also my prosthetist, has noticed my improved balance and new “guns!” I can now lift a full 24-pack of water out of my car and into the top shelf of my refrigerator without hurting myself-something I was not able to do before. I realize that might seem like a small thing to most people, but for me it was very empowering, and inspired me to set higher goals.

"The personal training sessions with Brian began with functional movement instruction, plus a few yoga poses and stretches adapted for my needs. He patiently helped me chip away the “stone” that had taken over my body, and soon it responded by straightening up and moving much more freely. With my body in better alignment, even my head felt lighter! Since then they we have added kettle bells and other exercises which continue to increase my strength, flexibility and endurance. I began attending Karen’s Yin class about a year ago and have found it to be the most relaxing experience of my life! Every week I look forward to “Monday’s with Brian” and “Tuesday’s with Karen!” I feel strong and handle stress better than I have in years. My journey has taken many turns and I've hit a few bumps along the way, but I continue to move forward, achieving goals and setting new ones. I’m now working with Brian on improving my diet by eliminating processed foods and learning how to change not only what I eat, but combining the proper proportions of foods to obtain optimal health benefits. It’s been a bit of a struggle for me, but I’m eating better than I ever have, and doing my best not to focus on the number on my bathroom scale. I've also purchased a package of Loaded Yoga classes that I’m looking forward to taking this summer!

"The biggest difference between my experience at WGY and other fitness facilities is the emphasis on doing the exercises correctly; as Brian says, “quality is more important than quantity.” Although I feel challenged, I never leave the studio feeling overworked or tired. In fact, just the opposite is true - my energy level skyrockets, and my mood is uplifted. My kids love the mommy who comes home after yoga! :-)

"The WGY staff’s expertise and commitment to the needs of their clients-providing yoga and wellness instruction for “every body”- is incredible. I have come to know, love and trust them like family and can’t imagine my life without WGY! My advice to people on the fence about joining WGY? If I can do it, you can! Choose to thrive! The only sure way to fail is to not try."  #liveinspired

How She Achieved a Size 2 in 90 Days, Client of the Month

Each month Winter Garden Yoga features a client who has achieved amazing results with our guaranteed methods. We call this feature: Winter Garden Yoga's Client of the Month.

Nominees share their stories (in their own words) and their photographs to inspire others to break old, destructive habits and to rise higher than ever before.

This month we are proud to share Gloria's story. How did she get rid of nagging aches and pains and drop from a size 8 to a size 2?!

Read on...

What made you decide to join Winter Garden Yoga?

Once I visited WGY and took a few classes, there was not any question about joining. I really enjoyed the three classes I had taken, all beginner's yoga, and felt very welcomed by Brian and fellow classmates. I had been wanting to try yoga for a while, and I thought the practice could help me to achieve better balance in my life. I had concentrated on nourishing my mind and spirit but did very little to properly nourish my body (including physical exercise. I fell in love with WGY instantly and decided to commit with a membership :D

What results have you received since joining WGY?

So many....most of all, I have noticed I am less stressed out. I am coping better with stressful situations at work and in my personal life. I have better mental strength. I am physically energized (the best part :). I realized recently that the aches and pains that I used to experience frequently have disappeared (sore joints during weather changes.) I am feeling better than ever, coupled with the confidence I've gained from all of the physical results!! I am down from a size 8 (and about to bulge out of that) to a size 2!! I literally did not know this was physically possible!!  I actually have great posture now, and have even been told that it is perfect! Feeling muscles that have always been too small and covered with fat to be visible.
Gloria was almost a size 10. After 90 days she is now a size 2!

What do you like best about WGY?

Honestly I love the atmosphere most, which includes everything! The instructors and other members are so supportive. The actual studio is calm and relaxing.

What would you say to someone on the fence about joining WGY?

Don't wait one more day. You will know instantly if it is for you. The support that I have received has been priceless. In the past, I would have stopped at day 60, size 6. Not because I was lazy (I was,) but because I didn't know any better. I lacked any sense of body consciousness. Now I have the tools to take me further. I would not have experienced that had I not tried that first class.

Have you been nominated yet? We want to hear your story. Contact us immediately and we will be honored to feature you and your story.

Isn't it time to do something just for you? Are you ready to be just like Gloria? Are you ready for your own life changing transformation?

All the best,

Brian

The 3 Mistakes Yoga People Make, Winter Garden Yoga

The 3 Mistakes Yoga People Make, Winter Garden Yoga

I’ve been teaching and practicing yoga for nearly 20 years now. I’ve been to a lot of classes. I’ve been to a lot of workshops. I’ve watched countless DVDs. To put it mildly, I’ve seen it all.

And, because of what I’ve seen, I became very passionate to un-do the stuff that’s being done. So I developed my own method of yoga called FunctionalYoga Instruction™. As you know, my method of yoga is based on strength versus flexibility, alignment versus depth, and awareness versus appearance.

This method is changing lives. I invite you to visit WinterGarden Yoga whenever you’re in the area or to check out our one of a kind DVDs.

If you can’t make it out to see us, I want to share some very important information with you: The 3 Mistakes Yoga People Make.

Don’t take any of it personally. You may not even be aware that you are making a mistake or putting yourself at risk. After all, students do what teachers say. I’m inviting you to open your mind and own up to this stuff so that you can continue to experience yoga in a healing and happy way.

Here they are…

Number One: Stretching

This is a big one and it is a tough one to address because stretching is almost always synonymous with yoga. My mission in life is to change this association forever.

You see, stretching implies that the soft tissue is literally being elongated. This is great if you want to destabilize your joints or risk tearing your muscles. If that’s your goal, keep stretching.

The truth is that our muscles are long enough already. All we need to do is reprogram our nervous system in order to allow our muscles to achieve their fullest range of motion. By doing so, you will become more ‘flexible’ faster and safer. All of the instructors at Winter Garden Yoga are experts at this technique.

Number Two: Workout

I am going to paraphrase Pavel Tsatsouline, “Let yoga be yoga. Let cardio be cardio. Let weight training be weight training.” Yoga can’t be everything. It wasn’t designed to be.

Now, I’ll tell you that Winter Garden Yoga’s clients have said that our classes feel like a workout, and I understand that. After all, our method is based on strength and alignment. And yes, you will get toned. And yes, you will burn calories. But here’s the difference: yoga is just part of the package. Our clients are encouraged to go for walks (cardio) and to lift weights (weight training). When you combine all three components, you’ll have a potent combination that will cover all the bases.

Number Three: Ego

A lot of yogis focus on “How does this pose look?” or “I should be able to do this.” This is the ego. Leave it at the door or with your shoes. At Winter Garden Yoga, our instructors encourage all of our clients to focus on how a pose feels. Don’t take this the wrong way: we don’t care if you can get your hand to the ground or if you can perform some deep-stretch-foot-behind-the-head-maneuver. If you can do it, great.

We care about how your pose feels to you right now. Not what you could do 20 years ago… or 20 minutes ago… only right now. “Can you breathe here?” “Can you meditate here?” These are the questions that will flush out the ego quickly, get you tuned in, and keep you injury free.

That’s it. The 3 Mistakes Yoga People Make. Believe me, there’s a lot more but if you start with these top three, I guarantee that you will see amazing results quickly. In fact, if this happens to you (and it will), contact me at WinterGardenYoga.com because I’d love to hear your story.

All the best,

Brian
